RebelDot Commits to Science-Based Targets: Leading Climate Action in Romania’s Tech Sector

RebelDot now has validated Science Based Targets, aligning our climate action with what science says is needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

At RebelDot, we believe that technology should shape a better, more sustainable world. This belief is what pushed us to take a hard look at our environmental impact and start doing better.

Today, we’re happy to share a milestone: our science-based targets (SBTs) have been officially validated. We're now one of the few companies in Romania, and even fewer in the tech space, to make this kind of science-aligned climate commitment.

What are Science Based Targets?

Science Based Targets (SBTs) are greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets aligned with the level of decarbonization required to keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C, as defined by climate science.

They are:

  • Built on rigorous methodology and aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
  • Designed to bring credibility, structure, and urgency to corporate climate action.

For RebelDot, they are a way of turning values into measurable, time-bound goals and being transparent about our progress.

Our commitment: 42% reduction by 2030

We’ve committed to cutting our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% by 2030, using 2024 as our baseline. These near-term targets have been validated by SBTi, and they’re ambitious, but realistic.

Behind this commitment lies our internal emissions accounting methodology, developed in line with the GHG Protocol. Building this structure from the start gave us a solid foundation, one that helped us approach this process with clarity.

First, it helped us truly understand our carbon footprint. We were able to pinpoint exactly where our emissions were coming from, across all scopes. This gave us visibility into the impact of our day-to-day operations and helped us move from assumptions to actual data.

Second, it allowed us to identify realistic opportunities for reduction. With a clear picture of our footprint, we could start asking smarter questions - Where can we make the biggest difference? What can we change in the short term, and what needs a longer runway?

Finally, it gave us the confidence to set targets that are both clear and justified. Rather than choosing numbers that simply sounded good, we used data and scenarios to set goals that are science-aligned and achievable.

Why Science-Based Targets matter - Especially for companies like RebelDot

There’s a common belief that ambitious climate goals are only for massive corporations with endless budgets. But we want to challenge this view. We’ve found that being a small-to-medium company gives us an edge:

We’re agile enough to make decisions quickly and act across teams without getting stuck in endless layers of approval. More importantly, we’ve learned that climate responsibility is about your mindset and the values you choose to lead with, and it doesn’t matter how big you are. Our clients, partners, and team expect us to walk the talk when it comes to sustainability, and we take that seriously. Setting science-based targets helps us future-proof our operations and stay a credible, trustworthy partner in a world that’s rapidly changing.

In short, setting science-based targets helps us stay accountable, resilient, and aligned with the kind of future we want to help build.

Methodology first: What made our journey easier

If there’s one thing that made this journey smoother, it’s that we didn’t wait for validation to begin acting. We started by calculating our emissions using Plan A, a platform that gave us reliable and accurate data from the start. That first step gave us a clear overview of our impact and helped us move forward with confidence.

But we didn’t stop there.

Building our own internal methodology, based on the GHG Protocol, allowed us to go deeper, to break down our numbers, get into specifics, and really understand the story behind our emissions. That structure helped us translate raw data into informed decisions and made the process feel a lot less overwhelming.

It gave us confidence in our data. Rather than working with estimates or incomplete information, we had a system in place that allowed us to gather reliable numbers.

Then it provided a clear baseline for decision-making. Knowing where we stand meant we could measure progress in a meaningful way, and make informed choices about where to focus our efforts.

Ultimately, it allowed us to model different scenarios and set goals that are both meaningful and achievable. This helped us commit to targets we knew were within reach, without losing sight of ambition.

Having that foundation in place made the SBTi process smoother and set us up for long-term success.

What comes next

Getting our targets validated is just the beginning.

From here, we’ll keep a close eye on our emissions, making sure we’re tracking and understanding them year over year. We’ll prioritize energy efficiency wherever possible and explore renewable energy options and low-carbon ways of working.

Just as importantly, we’ll report transparently on our progress, sharing both the wins and the challenges along the way.

Why we recommend SBTs

To other businesses, large or small, considering the path of sustainability, we say: start with science. Science-based targets offer clarity, structure, and global credibility.

SBTs give you a clear framework, and if you build your methodology first, the rest doesn’t feel overwhelming - it feels doable.

We’re not perfect. But we’re committed. And we’re proud to be part of a global movement where companies are trying to build a more responsible future.
